Complex trauma describes repeated or ongoing experiences of abuse, violence or neglect, and the effects these experiences can have. The experiences can occur at any age, or across different ages.
Trauma in early childhood can be especially harmful. Early childhood trauma generally means trauma between birth and the age of six.
It is behaviour which is not accidental and which is not considered ‘normal’ (outside of norms of conduct). It can be caused by parents, caregivers, other adults or older adolescents.
