Informed by current research they provides information about abuse and other traumas and how traumatic experiences can affect people, at the time of the trauma, and afterwards. The  focus is on survivors’ strengths and resilience, the role of coping strategies, how the brain responds to stress, and, most importantly, highlights research which shows that recovery is possible.

Understanding Complex Trauma and Strategies to Support Yourself

What you will learn:

The educational workshops are offered in three different formats – webinar (1hour) interactive session – (2 hours) and in person full day workshop

The workshops aim to provide information about the different types of trauma and an understanding of the impacts complex trauma.  It provides information about the need for both physical and emotional safety which looks different for each person. We explore the impacts on the body and the brain and subsequently, how we function in the world because of trauma experiences. There are also some techniques to support regulation and self care.

This webinar is educational. It is not a therapeutic group; it focuses on safety, self-care and support.

In all formats of our workshops, there is opportunity to either use the chat function or interact in person but there is no pressure to speak or contribute, and participants do not need to share their stories.

Key Topics:

By participating in the educational webinars participants will:

  1. Learn more about the types of trauma and their possible impacts
  2. Understand how trauma affects the brain and the body
  3. Learn how to identify triggers and strategies to manage them
  4. Explore ways to engage in self-care and enhance a felt sense of safety

By participating in the full day workshop, participants will:

  1. Learn about complex trauma, how common it is and how prior trauma may explain and/or relate to current challenges with relationships, self-esteem, health, wellbeing and other life issues
  2. Identify strengths, the ways people coped when experiencing trauma, the ways they are coping now and understand other ways of coping.
  3. Understand more about the brain, trauma and stress
  4. Explore strategies to help steady emotions, including learning about triggers and how to recognise and better manage them
  5. Learn where to find help, how to care for oneself, how to interact in healthy ways, and explore possibilities for recovery

Who should attend?

Adult survivors (over 16 years of age) who have experienced any form of childhood trauma and/or abuse. This includes emotional, physical and sexual abuse, neglect, growing up with domestic violence, with a parent with a mental illness, who was suicidal, abused substances and/or was imprisoned or with other forms of separation e.g. divorce, grief and loss.

Please do not register for this workshop if aiming to attend in a professional capacity, this is not a professional development training. It is a space created for survivors with living and lived experience of complex trauma.
